Chopin Waltz no 14 in E minor op. posth. Published posthumously in 1868, the Waltz in E minor was composed quite early, in 1830, shortly before Chopin left his native Poland for Vienna. The waltz remained a foreign musical form to Chopin. His early waltzes, particularly those he composed after reaching Vienna, show an effort to assimilate the Viennese style. Indeed, some of them have such charming and flowing melodies one could imagine them possibly serving as accompaniment to the dance itself. Many, on the other hand, show the undeniable pull of Chopin’s Polish background resulting in music meant only for the concert stage and, in some cases, waltzes in name only. The Waltz in E minor, though an early waltz, stands in the middle of this spectrum. This colorful waltz has repeated sections which ultimately ends with the coda: a series of arpeggios, driving the waltz to its conclusion. Full-voiced tonic and dominant chords then end the waltz in a dramatic tone. This E minor waltz is in a modified rondo form as "Introduction–A–B–A–B–A–C–A'–coda". Happy New Year! Chopin Valse de l'adieu op 69 no 1 in A-flat major Chopin ‘Farewell’ Waltz op. 69 No. 1 is one of those very poignant melodies. On the way back from Paris, Chopin met Maria Wodziński, daughter of his parents' friends. He fell in love with her and was engaged to marry her, but the wedding was canceled because of Chopin's bad health or perhaps his lack of wealth. He wrote 'The Farewell Waltz' on the morning of his departure from Dresden, and the relationship ended. Being anxious and morose, Chopin composed songs to cope with his sorrows. While it starts out with his characteristic ‘yearning’ poignant melody, later sections do have more bouncy and happy motifs..as if he is remembering happier times. Also in the later C section the downbeat shifts to beat 2 instead of 1, alluding to the dance of Poland, his native country, the Mazurka.. Some of my favorite waltz melodies includes this charmer, Tchaikovsky's Valse Sentimentale, and Chopin's E minor Waltz. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I also have a CD (C'est la vie) coming next week.
